The Tanzania Investment Center (TIC), the Tanzania Fertilizer Regulatory Authority (TFRA) and the Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ESSA in Indonesia to develop a new fertilizer plant.
The factory will produce urea fertilizers using natural gas, and will be built in the Mtwara region. It is expected to help increase the production of agricultural products, and boost employment for young people.
The agreement was signed on 31 July 2024 at the Hyatt Dar es Salaam, at the Kilimanjaro hotel, where it was stated that the construction of the factory is expected to be completed by 2027 and its production will begin two years later, in 2029.
Speaking at the opening of the event, the Minister of Planning and Investment, Professor Kitila Mkumbo, said the construction of the factory will make Tanzania completely independent.
Executive Director of the Tanzania Fertilizer Regulatory Authority (TFRA), Joel Laurent, explained that there has been an increase in the use of fertilizers in the country from 500 000 t in 2022/2023 to 800 000 t in 2023/2024 with the expectation of further increases.
