Tata Chemicals Haldia plant receives shut down notice

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has instructed Tata Chemicals to shut down the 1.2 million tpy Haldia fertilizer plant, West Bengal. The direction follows speculation that the plant has violated liquid waste discharge rules. The CPCB analysed the company's samples, which showed a non-compliance in effluent discharge norms.
The plant produces sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, NPK complexes, diammonium phosphate and single super phosphate.
"This is to inform you that on March 11, the company received a notice from the CPCB under Section 5 of the Environment Protection Act, 1986, to shut down plant operations at Haldia for alleged non-compliance with the prescribed norms for liquid affluent discharge," Tata Chemicals commented in a regulatory filing to BSE.
According to the Times of India, Tata Chemicals has submitted the reports of independent labs (approved by the Ministry of Environment & Forest and West Bengal Pollution Control Board), which has confirmed that the levels are within the norms.
