In January 2026 Indian imports of NPKs and NP fertilizers rose by approximately 375 000 t as increased production and lower sales helped drive inventories up, as revealed by Argus Media.
India produced 1.14 million t of NPKs and NPs in January, up by almost 2% on January 2025, government data shows – the highest monthly output so far during the April - March 2025 - 2026 fertilizer year.
However, sales did fall by almost 14% on the year to 965 100 t last month, while imports fell by nearly 16% to 195 000 t, the lowest during the current fertilizer year.
The stockbuild – production plus imports minus sales – was 374 600 t for January, while total stocks of NPKs and NPs stood at 5 million t as of 1 February 2026, Argus Media estimated.
Cumulative production reached nearly 10.41 million t in the first 10 months of the 2025 - 2026 fertilizer year, a 12% rise on the year. Imports doubled to 3.49 million t, while sales hit 12.71 million t, down by 1% from 2025.
