Vale fertilizer unit fire

Vale has reported that there was a fire on a conveyor belt that feeds ammonium nitrate to a warehouse in the Cubatão Industrial Complex - Unit 02 in São Paulo state, Brazil.

According to a statement from Vale, there was an immediate evacuation and production shutdown of the unit and neighboring companies. Cubatão's Mutual Assistance Plan (PAM) was also triggered. According to the Civil Defense, the community of Mantiqueira, in the vicinity of the unit, have been advised to preemptively evacuate the site. During the firefight, one of the attending firefighters was taken ill and attended to immediately. The fire did not affect other units of the company.

Vale is working with the Fire Department and local authorities to limit the effects of this incident on the local population. The causes of the fire are being investigated as well as any possible environmental damage.
