The multinational Dangote Group has awarded Técnicas Reunidas the contract to supply two hydrogen production reformers for the new ammonia and urea fertilizer complex it is developing in Gode, in the Somali province of Ethiopia.
Dangote is a major industrial conglomerate founded in 1978, headquartered in Nigeria, and operating in 17 African countries, with a diverse range of activities in sectors such as oil, gas, petrochemicals, fertilizers, cement, automotive, and property, among others. Its estimated turnover for 2026 is expected to be around US$36 000 million.
The plant it is developing in Gode aims to utilise Ethiopia’s natural gas reserves to manufacture fertilizers, reduce dependence on imports and foreign exchange expenditure, and bolster the country’s agricultural supply. It will have a production capacity of 3 million tpy of urea fertilizer, enabling it to meet demand from neighbouring markets.
The contract awarded to Técnicas Reunidas includes the design, procurement, manufacture, and free on board (FOB) supply of two reformers for producing the hydrogen required to generate ammonia and urea at the plant.
This equipment will have a production capacity of over 200 000 Nm³/h. It will be supplied within a maximum of 18 months by TR-Technical, the division of Técnicas Reunidas specialising in the design and supply of heat transfer equipment.
The technology licensor for the reformers will be Topsoe, a Danish company specialising in chemical process technologies and catalyst manufacturing, particularly for the production of ammonia, hydrogen, fuels and other chemicals.
The contract puts Técnicas Reunidas in an excellent position to capitalise on new opportunities in the energy and fertilizer sectors across the African continent and expand its presence there; it also enables close collaboration with a leading technology licensor and strengthens Técnicas Reunidas’s position in low-carbon hydrogen production and its derivatives.
