Fertilizers Europe has released a statement on the European Council’s decision to suspend customs tariffs for one year on key nitrogen-based fertilizers, including urea and ammonia.
“At a time when the EU is calling for greater strategic autonomy, resilient supply chains and stronger domestic industrial capacity, this decision sends the wrong signal. It risks weakening the very European fertilizer production base that the EU has recently recognised as essential for food security, farmers’ resilience and Europe’s long-term competitiveness.”
“The European fertilizer industry is prepared to readily supply domestic farmers. Affordable access to quality fertilizers is essential for agricultural production and food security. However, the EU’s support for farmers must not come at the expense of the domestic industry. EU Farmers and fertilizer producers are part of the same value chain. Measures that undermine one part of that chain will ultimately weaken the resilience of the whole European agri-food system.”
“Fertilizers Europe calls on the European Commission to closely monitor the impact of this measure on EU production, ensure it remains temporary, and avoid any extension that would further weaken Europe’s fertilizer manufacturing base.”
“Europe’s food security depends on both farmers and the industries that supply them. The EU must move from short-term crisis measures towards a coherent policy framework that supports farmers while strengthening domestic fertilizer production, thus delivering on the objectives of the Fertiliser Action Plan.”
The statements made by Fertilizers Europe are presented as originally released and do not reflect the opinions of World Fertilizer.
