Alleima has introduced SAF™ 2906 (UNS S32906), a corrosion-resistant super duplex stainless steel with high mechanical strength.
The urea production industry faces significant challenges due to the highly corrosive nature of the process environment, particularly in the high-pressure section. Equipment failure resulting from corrosion can lead to costly downtime and maintenance. Therefore, selecting appropriate materials is crucial for ensuring the longevity and efficiency of urea production plants.
To address these challenges, we have introduced SAF™ 2906 (UNS S32906), a corrosion-resistant super duplex stainless steel with high mechanical strength. This grade was developed to meet the stringent requirements of the urea industry, which demands exceptional durability and reliability of the materials which will operate in the urea synthesis process.
SAF™ 2906 offers:
- Excellent resistance to carbamate solutions, even with extremely low concentrations of oxygen present.
- Excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
- High resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC).
- Good weldability.
- Very high mechanical strength. The yield strength is about three times higher than that of conventional austenitic stainless steels.
Accelerating performance, strength, and durability
SAF™ 2906 is the latest addition to the Alleima portfolio of products for the urea industry. The grade has a carefully balanced composition with high chromium and nitrogen content and a moderate amount of molybdenum, optimized for superior corrosion resistance in carbamate solutions. Additionally, the grade exhibits high resistance to localized corrosion and SCC caused by chlorides.

The combination of outstanding corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength offers design advantages, enabling lighter constructions and thinner wall thicknesses. Its resistance to general corrosion makes it a reliable solution for constructing the high-pressure synthesis section of a urea plant, as it does not corrode actively in carbamate solutions, even with extremely low oxygen concentrations. SAF™ 2906 can be successfully used in the high-pressure section of the urea plant for all components.
