The first export cargo of urea to Australia under a government-to-government deal was shipped from Bontang on 14 May with a vessel carrying 47 250 t of urea.
The shipment is the first part of a commitment by Indonesia to ship 250 000 t under the deal with Australia. The Indonesian government plans to increase the volume to 500 000 t, which would bring the total value of the deal to US$398 million.
This deal came as part of a wider round of offtake deals and discussions, which signal a step change in the marketing approach for Indonesian granular urea. Previously, most product has been sold on a spot basis, primarily through sales tenders.
In 2025, Indonesia exported 1.72 million t of urea, up from 1.41 million t in 2024.
