Gas y Petroquimica de Occidente (GPO) has reached 80% completion on its US$1.6 billion anhydrous ammonia plant in Topolobampo, Sinaloa, with commercial production targeted for 2027.
The facility will produce approximately 800 000 tpy of anhydrous ammonia. Once operational, it will become Latin America’s largest merchant ammonia plant, positioning Sinaloa as a strategic hub for chemical production and agricultural input security in the region.
The GPO project is one of two fertilizer investments under construction in Mexico. Fermachem broke ground on a US$1.6 billion facility in Lerdo, Durango, in June 2026. That plant is slated to begin commercial production in 2029 using self-generated electricity and carbon capture technologies to produce about 1 million tpy of granulated urea. Together, the projects are designed to expand production capacity for granulated urea and ammonia.
In total, the private companies are investing more than US$3.2 billion to build the two fertilizer complexes.
