The announcement was made in the company's latest operational review. BHP has spent US$2.97 billion on the project so far.
According to the company, Stage 1 of the project is 91% complete. Work is currently being carried out to finish the excavation and lining of the production and service shafts, and to continue the installation of essential surface infrastructure and utilities.
