The first shipment of 30 000 t of potash fertilizer from Belarus is set to arrive in New Orleans, Louisiana, US, after sanctions on Minsk were lifted.

The shipment will be the first to arrive from Belarus to the US in four years, after sanctions were placed on the country in 2021 following Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko’s suppression of pro-democracy protests in 2020.

As previously noted in September, President Donald Trump stated that the US was working on a large scale deal to purchase fertilizers from Belarus. Currently almost 80% of fertilizer imports come from Canada which is presently engaged in a trade war with the US.

The US will continue to buy Canadian potash whilst pursuing this alternative supply.
