Moe reportedly opposes the federal government’s plans to introduce carbon taxes across Canada. Moe will replace Brad Wall (who is retiring) and it is expected that he will be sworn in as premier in the coming days.
Saskatchewan is home to some of the largest potash and uranium reserves in the world, which are mined by companies such as Nutrien Ltd and Cameco Corp. According to Reuters, the provincial government earns royalties from production of its mined resources, as well as crude oil.
Reuters reports that Moe will become premier as Saskatchewan struggles to end budget deficits that have been caused by a major decrease in the price of commodities.
Former Premier Brad Wall has been critical of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government and its plans for a carbon pricing system. Former provincial environment minister Moe has promised that he will continue to fight against the government’s plan, claiming that it would not do anything to decrease carbon emissions whilst costing the Saskatchewan economy over CAN$2 billion.
